Casale Monferrato

Casale Monferrato is the gateway to the wine-growing region that produces Barolo, Barberas and Barbaresco. The Castello is situated close to the river in a very picturesque setting. The antiques market is held every second weekend in the Mercato Pavia. Those who don't want to miss out on their morning coffee should call in at the Antico Caffè Pavia, a genuine traditional coffee house. The romanesque-gothic Duomo S. Evasio is particularly interesting and dates back to the 11th/12th centuries (daily 09.30 – 12.00, 15.30 – 19.00, winter 14.30 – 18.00). One of its most striking features is the ceiling which looks like a starry sky.

The church of San Domenico was founded in 1472 by Guglielmo VIII in the hope that God would give him both his support and an heir. Unfortunately his request was in vain. Only his brother had a son. It was this nephew who had the church completed in 1500. The three founders had themselves immortalised in the tympanum of the renaissance porch. In Via Mameli you can admire some of the most beautiful Palazzi from the 18th century.

The synagogue, built in 1595, can be found at Vicolo Salomone Olper 44 (Sun 10.00 – 12.00, 15.00 – 17.00).

The town's speciality is krumiri. Krumiri is a sweet biscuit that recalls the walrus moustache of King Vittorio Emmanuele II. You can buy it in the Pasticceria Portinaro at Via Lanza 16.
