Chiavari

Chiavari is located east of Portofino on the Riviera dei Levante and is one of the town with a not so flat coastal region. The beautiful old city invites you to explore it on your own two feet.

The castle and town walls are medieval and the architecture is stunning. Chiavari’s economic boom was in the 18th and 19th centuries as it was a large hub for the export of cloth, ships Campanini, which are very light and elegant chairs. You can still buy these chairs in the Ditta Levaggi in the Via Parma 469 for appr. 232 €. The town cathedral is located near the train station.

The cathedral was built during the years 1613 – 1633 and is attributed to an appearance of the Virgin Mary. Every morning there is a farmers’ market on the piazza where a large variety of local products and produce are sold. In the pedestrian zone one will find the oldest standing shop of the whole Riviera: the Pasticceria Copello. Also recommended is a visit to Caffé Defilla, which is the largest and most traditional coffee house around. Here you can enjoy paintings, large mirrors and many sorts of wine between sips of coffee and bites of the one of the many offered sweets and pastries.
